2013 Audi S4
NADAguides Test Drive Review

The luxury car market has long transitioned from a place where heavy vehicles delivering spongy rides dominated. In recent years, German auto companies have steered a new course in the premium vehicle category with driver-centric sports sedans. Luxury cars with focus towards responsive handling and performance, the sports sedan philosophy has worked best when a product provided an agreeable price. The BMW 3 Series has long been associated as the benchmark but is now facing serious competition.

While American, English and Japanese brands have created formidable fighters for the sport sedan category, BMW’s greatest challenge could be coming from its home country. Realizing a modern premium car world decades ago, Audi placed itself at the forefront of innovative design and technology development such as their quattro all-wheel drive system. With a claim to the under-$60,000 sport sedan crown almost as deserving as the 3 Series, the 2013 Audi S4 is a principled performance four-door.

Based on the Audi A4 sedan, the S4 places a greater adhesion to the performance theme of a sport sedan with looks and hardware. For 2013, the Audi S4 is offered in a Premium plus and Prestige trim package level. Through exterior styling, the S4 treatment entitles the 2013 Audi sedan to a unique grille appearance, front splitter and rear diffuser. For 2013, Audi’s bolder front end is now a characteristic of the S4 sedan. Expected to stand out from the sports sedan herd, the 2013 Audi S4’s new front and chiseled bodylines go a long way to defining the vehicle. Featuring reshaped headlamp housings, the Audi S4 incorporates xenon plus headlight illumination with LED daytime running lights. Rear fog lights are also included on the Audi S4 sedan for greater viability in less than ideal driving conditions. Five-spoke 18-inch wheels on summer tires and power-adjustable, auto-dimming mirrors are also equipped specifically for the Audi S4. Ten exterior color options present a rainbow of appearance possibilities for the luxury sedan.

Dedication to the sport luxury theme continues inside the 2013 Audi S4. An attractive mix of sophisticated comfort and sports car style, quality leather and Alcantara surfaces are applied in a top-notch manner throughout the spacious interior environment of the S4 sedan. Front and rear passengers fit comfortably inside of the Audi S4 thanks to a layout providing loads of legroom. At the front, specially designed S4 sport seats provide 12 way power adjustments, as well as 4-way power lumbar support. Through a flat-bottom steering wheel, the driver of the 2013 Audi S4 is provided with easy access to stereo and navigation controls. Other controls found on the Audi S4 sedan’s dashboard are of high quality and feature a sleek appearance. A fully automatic tri-zone climate control system allows the first and second row passengers to dial the temperature towards a preferable level. The standard audio system on the 2013 Audi S4 is an AM/FM stereo with MP3 playback capability. Bluetooth connectivity for mobile phone devices is also included for safe, hands-free operation. For a premium sport sedan, the standard entertainment system does provide an underwhelming sense of amusement. A worthy upgrade may be the optional Audi MMI Navigation plus system (included with the Prestige package) offering a seven-inch touch screen control panel. In addition to the MMI Navigation plus package, the available 14-speaker, 505-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system could also provide some additional power. Not as roomy as the cabin space, truck space for the S4 sedan is rated at a class average 12.4 cubic feet.

Powering the 2013 Audi S4 sedan is the supercharged FSI 3.0 liter V6 powerplant. An all-aluminum engine, the Eaton supercharger with gasoline direct injection provides 333 horsepower and 325 pounds and feet of torque at the driver’s disposal. A six-speed manual or an S tronic seven-speed transmission is offered in concert with the 2013 Audi S4‘s quattro all-wheel drive system. For 2013, the S tronic equipped with a new crown-gear center differential delivers more responsible power delivery. When utilizing the S tronic gearbox, the 2013 Audi S4 offers a smooth-running automatic mode. Manual shifting mode does leave a longish shift throw but still allows the Audi S4 to accelerate quickly. 0 to 60 mile per hour launches in 4.9 seconds provides a lively driving experience right off the line. Effectively demonstrating its personality as a sport sedan, the Audi S4 can achieve an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour. When it comes time to slow down, the 2013 Audi S4 is wonderfully equipped thanks to large diameter, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes. From 60 miles per hour to a still stand, the Audi S4 average stopping distance averages at 109 feet.

The 2013 Audi S4 sedan excels in placing control in the driver’s hands. The newly available Drive Assist package adds drive select controls providing the ability to tailor engine performance towards comfort or sport. Adaptive cruise control and dynamic steering is also included with the Drive Assist package. Driving the Prestige trimmed version of the 2013 Audi S4, Audi Side Assist monitors the vehicle’s blind spot areas and delivers a visual warning if needed. These modern options on the 2013 Audi S4 heightens the comfort and sport feel of the sedan to the level expected from a premium vehicle.

Turning within an 18.8 feet radius, the addition of electric power steering to the 2013 model year S4 may provide a numbing feel when cornering. Despite the light feel, steering still transmits a performance sensation to the driver as the Audi S4 handles nicely through its S Sport calibrated suspension. The sport-tuned suspension of the S4 does have a tendency to jostle slightly but maintains a firm grip on the road. The all-wheel drive quattro system would normally direct its 333-horsepower worth of energy to the rear wheels distributed to the front only when needed.

Retailing from $48,495 for the Premium plus model with a manual gearbox to $49,895 for the S tronic-equipped Prestige version, the level of handling and comfort included on the 2013 Audi S4 will not disappoint sport sedan buyers.
