For 2012, the Volkswagen GTI receives only minor changes. Autobahn editions get aluminum interior trim and push button start, a golf ball-style shift knob (on cars equipped with the DSG transmission), as well as new ten-spoke, 18-inch Serron alloy wheels. Those models, plus all GTIs with sunroof and navigation, also get LED daytime running lights. A new GTI with Convenience and Sunroof adds a power tilt/slide sunroof, leather-trimmed steering wheel and the Premiun VIII touchscreen stereo with in-dash CD changer.
Strong all-around performance; good fuel economy; excellent DSG transmission; classy interior; strong safety
The GTI sticks with its model heritage, offering surprisingly quick acceleration and crisp handling while sipping fuel. Handling in the GTI is light and quick, and the GTI offers interior appointments that are more premium compared to other sporty small cars, as well as safety and entertainment features that are otherwise in the realm of luxury vehicles. Price is a big selling point for the GTI as well; starting under $24,000, the GTI offers a lot of performance for less money than other hot hatches and a lot less than all-wheel-drive machines like the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
