Optional items designed to improve the capabilities of the 2012 Sierra 250HD pickup truck includes automatic locking rear differential, back-up heavy-duty battery and an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller. Powerplant selection for the 2012 GMC 2500HD consists of either a gasoline or diesel fueled engine. Standard on the pickup truck is the Vortec 6-liter V-8 generating 360 horsepower and 380 foot-pounds of torque. The optional engine is the 6.6 liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 which is design to move rear or all four wheels with 765 pounds-foot of torque. Towing ability with the 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD sees up to 14,700 pounds available using the 6-liter V-8 engine and as much as 17,500 pounds of trailer pulling ability with the Duramax turbo-diesel engine.

The Sierra got a refresh in 2011, so not much changes for this year. A new Texas Edition package and a Premium package become available, both including 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, heated power-adjustable mirrors, heavy-duty trailering, a locking differential and dual-zone climate control. Denali models get standard heated and cooled front seats and heated steering wheel and a rearview camera standard.
