For 2012, four powerplants, two wheelbases and the choice of rear wheel or BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive defines the BMW 7 Series sedan. Powered with a 3-liter six-cylinder sending 315 horsepower through a 6-speed automatic, the entry line 2012 BMW 740i includes rearview camera, Dynamic Damping Control, cruise control, two-way power moonroof and a hard drive-based navigation system. A 544 horsepower V-12 engine is also available with the 2012 BMW 7 Series on the 5.5 inch longer wheelbase version. All 2012 BMW 7 Series models fitted with a V-8 or V-12 powerplant operates through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Provided through BMW dealerships, an aftermarket tuner version from Alpina allows the 2012 7 Series to take on a strong performance identity. The entire BMW 7-Series lineup of sedans carries into 2012 with no significant changes. Last year, BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system was offered for the first time in the 7-Series, on the 750i and 750Li models, and 6-cylinder engines came back to the 7-Series in the new 740i and 740iL. 2012 also marked the comeback of the high-performance Alpina B7.
Excellent handling and roadholding; lavish, roomy interior; comfortable ride; available all-wheel drive; top-tech options like Night Vision
The 7-Series is BMW's technology flagship, and by most measures it's the most luxurious model in the German automaker's lineup. And with a wide range of powertrain possibilities, along with standard and long-wheelbase versions--including greener ActiveHybrid and high-performance Alpina models. Even at its simplest, the 740i is one of the most athletic-feeling large sport sedans, while well-optioned 750 and 760 models offer some of the world's leading convenience and accident-avoidance technology.
