The Smart fortwo electric drive is the first electric vehicle in the Smart lineup. This fully electric car is powered by a 30 kW drive motor and 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. A 220V or 110V outlet can be used to charge the battery. The battery can be charged from 20 percent to 80 percent capacity in three and a half hours. Fully charging the battery shouldn't take more than eight hours and a single charge offers a range of 82 miles. Many regular features are included on the fortwo electric drive; electric power steering and air conditioning both come standard. Due to the electric motor the fortwo electric drive is fitted with a single fixed gear ratio transmission. Although small fleets of the vehicles are making their way to the U.S. and England, the vehicle will be available to everyone in a phase three launch scheduled for the 2012 model year.
