Due to a lack of popularity of the manual transmission, the 2009 Volvo S40 now offers only a five-speed automatic transmission. Other changes include Bluetooth compatibility, fog lights, sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, power driver seat and eight-speaker stereo with a six-CD changer and satellite radio. As standard, the T5 trim receives heated seats and the sporty R-Design, featuring a sport steering wheel and a watch-like gauge cluster. The 2.4i is equipped with a 2.4L inline-5 engine that is good for 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The T5 R-Design and T5 AWD R-Design are equipped with a turbocharged 2.5L inline-5 engine that churns out 227 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. EPA fuel economy is estimated at 20 mpg city/28 mpg hwy and 23 mpg combined for the S40 2.4i, while the T5 R-Design records 19/28/23, and the T5 AWD R-Design delivers 18/26/21. Volvo S40 safety equipment includes traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes front-seat side airbags, full-length head curtain airbags and whiplash-reducing head restraints.
