Following last year's redesign, the compact four-door 2009 Subaru Impreza Sedan receives few changes. The Impreza 2.5 i is powered by a horizontally opposed 2.5L four-cylinder engine pushing out 170 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, while the Impreza 2.5 GT has a turbocharged version of the 2.5 i engine generating 224 hp and 226 lb-ft of torque. Subaru Impreza Sedan specifications list all-wheel drive and a passenger capacity of five. Transmission choices are either a five-speed manual transmission with incline start assist or a four-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control; however, the 2.5 GT offers only the automatic transmission. EPA fuel economy estimates are 20 mpg city/27 mpg hwy and 22 mpg in combined driving for the non-turbocharged manual-shift trims. The automatic transmission gets 1 mpg less on the highway for base trims, and the 2.5 GT trim scores 19/24/21 mpg. Following a complete redesign in 2008, the 2009 Subaru Impreza rolls on with a few important changes. A new model, the 2.5GT, features the 224-hp turbocharged four from last year's WRX, but with a softer suspension and equipped only as an automatic. The WRX itself benefits from the most updates. Power is boosted significantly, up to 265 hp and 244 ft-lb of torque. Also, both wagon and sedan now come with a revised exterior that includes a new grille, side bodywork and different spoilers. The interior gets new upholstery with contrasting red stitching, an aluminum footrest for the driver and electroluminescent gauges. Also, a power moonroof is now included with the Premium Package.

The 2009 Subaru Impreza continues to stand out from the rest of the small-car crowd because it offers road-oriented all-wheel drive across the line, while the interior is more sophisticated and the ride is smoother. The WRX still ranks as one of the best performance bargains on the market, and the 305-hp STi is a giant killer that still offers plenty of room for the family.
