2009 changes for the Mercedes-Benz R-Class crossover include the debut of the R320 Bluetec diesel engine, a standard sunroof and a new audio/navigation head unit loaded with HD radio, real-time traffic updates, Bluetooth, iPod interface and voice control. Also new is that R-Class models are now equipped with all-wheel drive. The R350 3.5L V6 pushes out 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the new R320 Bluetec V6 turbodiesel generates 210 hp and screams out 398 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are teamed with four-wheel drive through a seven-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the R350 is estimated at 15 mpg city/19 mpg hwy and 16 mpg combined, while the R320 Bluetec hikes those numbers up to 18/24/21 mpg. Mercedes R-Class standard safety features include rollover-sensing stability control, antilock disc brakes with brake assist, side-impact airbags for first- and second-row passengers, active front head restraints and side-curtain airbags for all three rows.
