With no major changes after significant updates last year, the 2009 Mazda MAZDA5 comes with a 2.3L four-cylinder engine that delivers153 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Standard is a five-speed automatic transmission on the Touring and Grand Touring trims, but optional on the Sport trim, which has a five-speed manual transmission. Mazda 5 EPA estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg city/27 mpg hwy and 23 mpg in combined driving for automatic transmission trims. Standard safety equipment includes four-wheel antilock disc brakes, front side airbags and three-row side curtain airbags, while stability control is not available. The MAZDA5 could be called a small minivan or a wagon, but either way, it seats up to six passengers and avails 44.4 cubic feet of cargo space, with the third-row seat folded flat. And while the sliding rear doors might be off-putting to some, the sliders facilitate loading passengers in tight parking spaces. With good fuel efficiency and safety, the Mazda 5 is great choice for many families.
