Since its redesign at Hyundai’s Southern California design studio in 2007, the 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe has been gaining steam in the compact sport utility segment. GLS trims receive a 2.7-liter 185 hp V-6 with standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic. SE and Limited get a 3.3-liter 242 hp V-6 and 5-speed shiftronic automatic borrowed from the Sonata. All Santa Fe’s have standard electronic stability control, side curtain airbags, and can be had in front or all-wheel, drive while still maintaining respectable 17/24 mpg city/hwy. The Hyundai Santa Fe, all-new inside and out for 2007, remains largely unchanged for 2008. XM satellite, a mid-model year addition for 2007, is now standard across the model range. Last year's Premium Package, which was composed of a sunroof and distinct interior trim, is standard on Limited trims. The same is true of the Infinity Logic 7 six-disc CD changer. Power mirrors are now an upgrade on SE and Limited trims, and the Ultimate Package is no longer offered on the SE and Limited trims. The contents of the Premium Package on GLS models have been altered slightly.

The 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe compares very favorably against the Honda CR-V and Toyota Highlander, offering a choice of V6 engines at a price point where the Japanese competition only offer four-cylinder motors. There is plenty of safety equipment, the driving dynamics are first rate, and the interior is both nicely finished and quiet. If the pricing isn't enough to intrigue you, the 100,000 mile warranty might just do the trick.
