Mitsubishi's Montero has been completely reworked for the 2001 model year. Dimensionally a large vehicle than its predecessor, the 2001 Montero opted for unibody construction for the sport utility vehicle. Four-wheel disc brakes, side impact airbags and a 3.5-liter V-6 engine generating 235 pound-feet of torque come as standard on the new Mitsubishi Montero. One year after an all-new Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe debuted, a convertible Spyder version is now available providing an open-air performance drive. The smaller, less expensive Montero Sport is now offered with a peppy 3.5 XS trim model for 2001. Mitsubishi's 2001 mid-sized sedans, the Diamante and Galant, add rear child-seat anchors. No major changes have been made to the Mirage for 2001 as a new Lancer compact car is set to replace the model starting in 2002.
