The 2001 Mercury lineup has been reduced to five vehicles with the discontinuation of the Mystique sedan. Base trim levels of the Mercury Grand Marquis boasts greater propulsion for 2001 thanks to a 20-horsepower boost to its 4.6-liter V-8 engine. An all-new LSE trim version of the Grand Marquis debuts with a 235-horsepower V-8 made possible with a dual exhaust system. Sporting a center console shifter resulting in a five-passenger cabin, the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis LSE is also equipped with a rear air spring suspension and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Receiving a massive styling update last year, the Mercury Sable can travel further in 2001 with the addition of a larger 18-gallon fuel tank. Minor styling revisions have been performed to the Cougar for 2001 and a six-disc in-dash CD changer is now optional. Mercury has tweaked the styling for their Villager minivan for 2001 with a more prominent waterfall grille and a new tailgate.
