With the passing of Ferry Porsche in March of 1998, the instrumental figure of the famed auto company wearing his family name is proceeding boldly into 1999. The 1999 model year for Porsche is primarily defined by the radical re-engineering the iconic 911 sports car. Recognized as the type 996 platform, the 1999 Porsche 911 employs a refreshed design, reworked chassis and suspension. The most dramatic change with the new 911 comes with the dismissal of air-cooled engines that have been part of the sports car's heritage since 1963. On the 911 Carrera 4, the all-wheel drive system is mated with a new Porsche Stability Management system for added security while cornering. Entering its third year in production, the Porsche Boxster has successfully found a meaningful niche in the category of small roadsters. The 1999 Porsche Boxster features no major changes for the previous model year.
