Several Mercury products receive significant tweaks for the 1998 model year. The most noticeable changes are seen with the 1998 Mercury Mystique and the Grand Marquis. The European-derived Mystique receives a larger more defined grille and reshaped headlights. Mercury's largest sedan, the Grand Marquis, enters 1998 with a new front end appearance as well as several mechanical modifications. Improved braking, cooling system and an upgraded rear suspension have been added to the 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. Mercury's sport utility Mountaineer gains a new base six-cylinder engine with available ControlTrac all-wheel drive and an updated grille appearance. Added to the Mercury division for 1997, the recently redesigned Tracer compact vehicle is offered with a sedan or wagon body style with no major changes for its sophomore year. For traditional Mercury fans, a conspicuous absence for 1998 is the rear-wheel drive Cougar that was retired last year.
