Vehicles built on a wagon body style have long been employed by Subaru in order to showcase the versatility of their all-wheel drive technology. For many years, the Subaru Legacy line offered a family-oriented wagon. During the mid-1990s, Subaru introduced the Legacy Outback wagon (later known simply as the Outback) featured a mix between a family hauler and an off-road capable vehicle thanks to a raised suspension. Through several generations of restyling, the Subaru Impreza hatchback compact car has also embodied a wagon-like appearance. In 1995, the Legacy-based Outback served as inspiration for applying the same principles of a lifted suspension for the Impreza creating the Outback Sport.
