A Japanese automaker known famously for their light-duty and medium-duty trucks, Isuzu first exposure to the United States truck market came through Chevrolet. The Chevrolet LUV was an Isuzu-built compact pickup first sold in 1972. The Isuzu nameplate would begin to adorn the truck in the 1980s selling the LUV as the P'up. Through its relationship with General Motors, the Japanese vehicle brand received a United States-built truck based on the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC Sonoma. Isuzu sold the Hombre pickup trucks starting in the mid-1990s defined with slightly different bodywork. For the 2006 model year, the Isuzu i-Series debuted derived from General Motors' mid-sized truck line. Since 2008, Isuzu has ceased sales of vehicles for general driving consumers in the United States. Isuzu still maintains a presence in the commercial duty industry with a commercial van and the NPR truck line-up.
