In the late 1980s, Mazda's entrance into the minivan market consisted of the MPV. Instead of a single sliding rear passenger door that was found on minivans from the Detroit Three, the first generation Mazda MPV featured hinged doors opening like a wagon or sedan. Originally featuring only passenger side rear door, the MPV added a second rear occupant entry door on the driver's side in 1996. The Mazda MPV was also notable for offering both four-wheel drive as well as refined momentum of a six-cylinder powerplant. A second generation variant of the Mazda MPV debuting in 1999 adopted rear sliding doors and was offered only with front-wheel drive. Mazda discontinued sales of the MPV with the arrival of the seven-passenger CX-9 in 2007. Sporting compact minivan characteristics, the Mazda5 served as cost-effective family transportation for up to six passengers.
