The first sport utility vehicle wearing an Acura badge emerged in 1996 based on the Isuzu Trooper. Offered solely for the United States market, the Acura SLX was a poorly received first attempt at entering the premium sport utility vehicle segment. Acura achieved better results with their second try at the luxury market niche with the MDX developed on the crossover platform. Accommodating three rows of passengers, the Acura MDX has earned a reputation for being an efficient, technologically forward choice among premium utility vehicle buyers. Acura later expanded their crossover line-up with the introduction of the smaller RDX. Originally powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant, the RDX adopted a V-6 engine in 2013. For a brief period between 2010 and 2013, Acura sold a radical four-door sport coupe crossover vehicle called the ZDX.
