Cadillac pioneered the modern idea of an automotive coupe in 1906 when they became one of the first major automakers to introduce a fully-enclosed vehicle with two doors. Through the second-half of the 20th century, the Eldorado name was associated as Cadillac's personal luxury coupe. Coupe de Ville was also a popular nameplate connected to the Cadillac line-up that ran until 1993. A follow-up to the Allante convertible, Cadillac attempted a return to two-door drop-top motoring with the Cadillac XLR featuring a retractable hardtop roof. The XLR roadster was built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Corvette but was offered with Cadillac Northstar engine power. More recent examples of Cadillac coupes have been released based on the CTS and now the ATS.
