With a long history of moving families with mid-sized and full-sized wagons, Oldsmobile would enter the minivan segment for the 1990 model year selling a vehicle called the Silhouette. Sharing platforms with other General Motors affiliated minivan for two generations from 1990 to 2004, Oldsmobile models typically received a greater level of standard features. The first generation Silhouette was based on the same futuristic exterior styling used with the Chevrolet Lumina APV and Pontiac's Trans Sport. Characteristics found on the first-generation Oldsmobile Silhouette included seven-passenger capacity, galvanized steel frame and composite body panels. The second-generation Oldsmobile Silhouette adopted a more conventional minivan design offered in two wheelbases. Production of the Silhouette ended in 2004 shortly before the Oldsmobile brand is discontinued.
