For a long time, the North American market was kept somewhat in the dark about Mercedes-Benz's reputation outside of the luxury vehicle field. In 2001, Mercedes-Benz's utility van technology was first introduced to the United States. Originally, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was supplied under the Freightliner name and later Dodge during the Daimler-Chrysler period. When Mercedes-Benz's parent separated with Chrysler, the Sprinter van was integrated with the brand for the first time in the United States starting in 2010. Powered by diesel engines, four-wheel drive was also added to the Sprinter for 2015. Starting in 2016, Mercedes-Benz starts selling a smaller, lower-priced van called the Metris for fleet customers.
