Utilizing Bruce Kirby sailboat designs, Ideal 18 were imported to the United States from a Canadian manufacturing facility. Since 1990, the Ideal 18 company’s 18-foot sailboat gained a quick following for its simple operation and solid performance. Ideal 18 later added the 23-foot Sonar in the 1993 model year. Shumway Marine would later be the manufacturer of American Ideal 18 sailboats.
